Episode 105. Class Assignment (1)
“The ball must have started by now.”
A deep voice rang out from inside the principal’s office. Eggler. He was the homeroom teacher of Class A and a professor of design magic.
“It’s a shame I can’t see the ball.”
The next person to speak was Professor Solana, whose voice was cold.
“I didn’t know that Professor Solana would be so interested in students’ dancing.”
“Professor Benitez, I think you misunderstood me. What I want to see is not dancing. It is a scene of politics and power through dance. Isn’t a ball a very interesting battlefield overflowing with despair, coldness, stubbornness, and jealousy?”
Professor Benitez shrugged his shoulders at Solana’s cold opinion. It was a barbed remark, typical of Professor Solana, who specialized in offensive magic.
At that moment, a large shadow fell over the table.
It was Keegan, the headmaster of Capotini School of Magic.
“Then shall we begin the story in earnest?”
Keegan looked at the four professors sitting around the reception table in the principal’s office: Eggler, Solana, Benitez, and Professor Gaizen.
The reason these four people are gathered here is because they are the homeroom teachers of each class.
“As you all know, after the prom, we will assign classes to all students at a gathering.”
Class Assignment. The four classes, A through D, are assigned by random drawing. The only thing that is fixed is the ratio of nobles to commoners.
This does not mean that class assignments are conducted solely by lottery from beginning to end. As an exception, there are students who can be ‘preempted’.
“I’m sure you’ve thought it through for the past two months?”
Homeroom teachers can select students they want before assigning classes.
Just three.
Although it was a small number compared to the class size, the professors knew its influence better than anyone else.
Even classes that seem similar at first tend to have different levels by the end of the semester. The role that creates that difference is played by the three students who took the lead in this position.
“Actually, this year, there were many things that had to be taken into special consideration. That’s why we are holding the ‘student preemption’ at this time when the cadets’ prom is in full swing.”
The other professors nodded as if they understood.
Normally, selecting students and assigning classes would be done with plenty of time to spare. It was usually around the weekend of the week after the prom.
But this intake was too large for Principal Keegan to control.
There are many talented magic students, and there is pressure from powerful families such as the Ielos and Delin families.
And above all, there was the ripple effect brought by the imperial aristocratic exchange student named Chloe.
‘If it hadn’t been held at the same time as the ball, the professors would have been caught up in countless political forces.’
Benitez also did not expect that the ‘student preemption’ would suddenly take place like this. However, when he thought about the intention, he could not deny that this was the best.
“But Principal Keegan.”
“Speak, Professor Solana.”
“What about Chloe? Honestly, among the four of us, who would turn down Chloe as our first student?”
At those words, Eggler and Gaizen nodded in agreement, but Benitez remained silent.
“Oh, Professor Benitez thought differently?”
“Well, I don’t know. What kind of impact that student will have on the class.”
A look of bewilderment poured over Benitez. How could you not know about the greatest talent of all time?
Professor Solana, seeing this, made a bold demand.
“Then, Principal, allow the other three, excluding Professor Benitez, to decide the order and select Chloe first.”
Although her attitude may have seemed somewhat rude, Solana had actually been at the school longer than anyone else here.
He may look like he’s in his thirties because of his elven blood, but he’s actually much older than Egeler or Keegan. Of course, he still had that kind of personality when he was actually in his thirties.
“That would be difficult, Professor Solana.”
This was Principal Keegan’s answer.
“Why?”
“Actually, Chloe, there was a prior agreement between Capotini and Americmana.”
“Prior consultation? Are you saying that Chloe has a specific professor in mind?”
“Yes. And that professor just so happens to be Benitez, the one who finds Chloe burdensome.”
Solana frowned. Not only did she not hide her displeasure, she also bit her lower lip. The other two professors were also disappointed, so an awkward silence flowed for a moment.
The reason they wanted Chloe wasn’t just because of Witherspoon’s fame or power. Chloe was known all over the continent as a magical genius, so it was a natural desire for an educator.
“Keegan, I have a request.”
“Egeler spoke softly. He was a longtime friend of Keegan’s, and he had a natural air of dignity.
People who didn’t know better mistook the dignified and cool Egeler for the headmaster of the magic school, instead of the bandit-like Keegan.
“Speak, Egel.”
“Now that Chloe has been preempted, I think it might be a problem for Professor Benitez to get the first turn as planned.”
The order of priority was to be based on research results from the past three years.
This year, Benitez, who has had an overwhelmingly good research performance, was first, followed by Solana, Eggler, and Geisen.
“I agree with Professor Egeler’s opinion. Since each of us had three chances, let’s count Professor Benitez as having used one of those chances with Chloe.”
“I agree too.”
Even Professor Kaizen, who had been quiet, chimed in. Keegan stroked his beard and looked at Professor Benitez. It was an unspoken question of whether he agreed.
“I’m fine. Originally, there were only two students I was trying to recruit.”
“Well, that’s good. Well, shall we start with Professor Solana?”
“The first cadet I will preside over is… … .”
Solana was going through the documents she had organized about her students. As she was doing so, she came across the document of Eric Eellos, who was considered one of the most talented students among the freshmen this year. The other professors looked at her with a strange look.
But she knew full well how high the stakes were for the Ielos family.
‘He has talent, but… … .’
Given the political influence they would wield, Eric Ielos is a double-edged sword.
‘There is no need to lead the class while embracing the risk factor.’
Eventually, the person who came out of her mouth was a child of a noble family that was much easier to handle than the famous magic family, Ielos. It was a choice that everyone could fully accept.
“My first choice is… … .”

Professor Egeler then spoke about his first pick. He also did not pick Eric Eellos, choosing the latter over the other two: competence and safety.
Next in line was Professor Kaizen. He called out the student’s name without hesitation.
“I’ll take Eric Elos first.”
“… … ?”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
The gazes of the other professors, except for Professor Kaizen, were intertwined.
The other professors didn’t know what kind of person Kaizen was. He had only been at the school for a few years, so they didn’t know how ambitious he was.
In fact, not all professors in the Capotini were supporters of the common people and enemies of the nobles. This was also a political group, and each member had their own greed.
However, the political influence of some powerful noble families was, above all, a difficult factor to deal with. It was like a poisoned rose. In this respect, Professor Kaizen’s choice seemed bold and reckless.
It was Principal Keegan who lightened the awkward atmosphere.
“Hmm, that’s an expected choice? So, did everyone choose their first students like this?”
Everyone nodded.
Next in line. Professor Benitez, who finally got to make the first choice, placed a piece of paper with the students’ information in the middle of the table.
One of them was marked.
“Luden Poinen? Who is this student?”
“You’re a third-class noble, but you’re not from a magical family?”
A student from a family that even the so-called magic professors didn’t know about. There was a high probability that he had no talent, or if he did, it was worthless.
“You’re making a very complacent choice by taking Chloe, Professor Benitez.”
“Haha, just wait and see.”
Benitez smiled leisurely, but was secretly surprised.
‘You weren’t from a magical family?’
This was information that even Benitez had not expected. Two months ago, due to his actions in the park, he had assumed that Luden was naturally from a magical family.
So you learned magic from someone else?
Whatever, it doesn’t matter. I’ve personally confirmed that Luden has incredible talent, just like Chloe and Eric.
Fortunately, the other professors were unaware of the hidden genius called Luden. Benitez laughed as he imagined Luden learning the magic of movement under his guidance.
“Now, pick Professor Solana again. This is your second pick.”
Keegan resumed the process. The second group of students chosen by Solana, Eggler, and Gaizen were obviously talented.
And the last third preemption.
This time, the unexpected choice came from Benitez.
“Uh, who is it?”
Professor Solana tilted her head and asked.
“My name is Oscar Tunio.”
“Oscar Tunio… This student is someone I’ve never heard of before?”
“I guess you’ve developed a hobby for raising students.”
“Professor Benitez must have some information we don’t know.”
Benitez was calm amidst the blind suspicion. He was confident this time too.
“Benitez, are you really going to make that decision?”
“Yes, principal.”
“You know you can’t cancel after this meeting, right?”
Benitez nodded. The other professors were of the same opinion. They were curious, but it was nothing to worry about.
The class was not just a competition between students. The professors were also competing with their own abilities, so honestly, if Benitez was making a mistake, it wouldn’t be bad for them either.
The remaining professors then completed the third round of selections with worthy students. It was a choice that left no room for objection.
“Then… this ends the student preemption.”
Keegan walked around the principal’s office, dispelling the barriers he had placed. Egeler, the designer of magic, followed suit and dispelled the barriers he had placed twice.
Now it was accessible from outside too.
“Let’s reflect the current decision immediately and prepare for the remaining half allocation lottery.”
Knock knock.
It was then that the clerk assisting the principal knocked on the door.
“Headmaster, the ball is coming to an end. The distinguished guests are also preparing to leave.”
“Let’s get out of here quickly. Now, you can all go back. Professor Benitez, just wait a moment.”
At those words, the three professors, except Benitez, stood up. Before leaving the principal’s office, Solana looked back at the remaining two and said.
“Sir, you are not going to change Professor Benitez’s decision, are you? I have clearly remembered the names of the two students. Luden Poinen and Oscar Tunio.”
“Don’t worry, Professor Solana. That won’t happen.”
“Trust me, then I’ll go find out who Witherspoon’s daughter danced with. I’ll see you in a minute.”
After Professor Solana left.
Keegan raised his large body and walked around the principal’s office again. Once again, a barrier was created by the principal’s hand.
Benitez noticed that the rebuilt barrier was stronger than it had been during their previous meeting.
“Benitez. What do you have to say?”
A little while ago, there was a telegram from Benitez and that was the reason for the secret meeting that followed.
“If it’s because of your preemptive students, then I don’t have to worry. I don’t really care.”
It was not a matter for me to get involved in as a principal. I also had faith that Benitez would not make a decision without thinking.
But what came out of Benitez’s mouth was far beyond his expectations.
“It’s a story about Per Lorenzini, Headmaster.”
Principal Keegan’s eyes became serious for a moment.
